Reflection 2/14

Jeremy Tiang was a very interesting speaker to listen to. I really liked how he put forth the situation about the translation world as is. It is often noticed that we do not vouch for work that has been translated.

Poetry is like an abstract art so to see Tracy K Smith’s take on the translation was very fascinating to me. Due to the employment of several literary devices it was interesting to see how the author went about translating it. Tracy also wrote a introduction and I am not sure if most translators do that, however it did aid the overall text. Something that also struck out to me was Tracy’s effort to capture the essence of the poem as is instead of just translating it for the sake of the vocabulary.

I saw some similarities between Whitman and Wei, and would like to know if these influence Tracy K Smith’s translation.
