Lecture- Esther Allen
In the lecture it was interesting to learn about Esther’s thoughts on her work with Di Benedetto’s novels. I really enjoyed how Esther really delved into Benedetto’s background and stories from his past which adds a lot of meaning to the work he’s done, as well as supporting his use of certain words such as ‘silentiary’ which Esther emphasizes on. As Esther brought into attention the German version of the book, it made me realize how translating texts in different versions and languages transforms the way they were initially supposed to be perceived slightly. As the author tries to find the best way to substitute a certain word in a specific language to another in a different language with the closest meaning but not quite the say.
Reflection Reading 2/7
Jeremy Tiang brings up an important issue associated with translation the value of shared experiences. I liked his take on the fact that language is one thing differentiating cultures and perspectives however the experience of being in a place can be felt on the same level by many individuals coming from different backgrounds
I really like how the fable for now transforms over the course of seven movements and the extent of imagination that is reflected off the work.
In the fictions of foreigness it can brought to the readers attention as to how foreigness that is an essential aspect of the text can be translated, so for someone translating the text in English it would be important to ensure the essence of the text is not lost.
As far as Gabriella Fort’s lecture goes I really enjoyed hearing about how Amazon Crossing pays royalties to their translators it was nice to have a editorial perspective and see things from that angle
