2/22 Reflections

I really enjoyed Tracy K Smith’s talk I felt like it was very natural and pleasant. I also liked how she spoke of there being no wrong or right when it came to her translations. A difference I did notice was how David’s vocab was very straightforward, meanwhile Smith’s was more serious and scholarly.

The Cavafy poems gave me an impression of the fact that most of the authors translate Greek more closely. They try to keep the real essence of the poem without making a lot of changes or personal additions, which is also the whole point of translating it as it must appear to the reader as it were intended to.

I also made an observation which could be driven based on the genres of books I read. Foreign fiction is more realistic than English fiction, as with English fiction they are always building up on the characters actions to make the read a thrill, whereas foreign fiction tries to keep it subtle.
